Art Commissioning & Curating: What to Know

How did you learn to paint?

Ever since the age of three, I knew I wanted to be an artist. I’m grateful that my parents noticed this spark in me and enrolled me in art classes. Painting became my favorite medium at an early age. Today, whether I’m working independently or on an art commissioning project, I often reflect on the early encouragement I received. I’m especially thankful to Mr. Williams, my high school art teacher, for being instrumental in inspiring me to pursue my passion.

From a business perspective, when I first began painting murals, I hustled and pursued multiple avenues. I applied for Calls to Artists from cities and arts councils, reached out to potential clients, and used social media to market myself. Old-fashioned word of mouth is still one of the best ways that art commissioning opportunities come to me.

In the meantime, I was pursuing a Master of Arts Administration at Winthrop. This program not only enhanced my artistic practice but also gave me the tools to understand the role of the art curator in both public and private art collections. Learning arts entrepreneurship was key to growing my career as both a muralist and creative collaborator.

Creative-wise, I am so grateful to now be living the dream! I’ve had the opportunity to paint and go beyond murals—designing fabricated sculpture, mosaics, metal, and more. These works often emerge through art commissioning collaborations and are featured on unexpected canvases like a light rail station, underpasses, airstream trailers, and staircases. It’s a special treat to work with communities, nonprofits, and art curators to contribute to creative placemaking, empowerment, and building connections across neighborhoods and cities.

This can include curating exhibitions or selecting work for permanent collections in public art spaces, corporate environments, apartment communities, and more.
